Fran Silvestre

Fran Silvestre studied at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, where he graduated with honours as an architect in 2001, and at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, where he specialised in urban planning, also achieving the highest qualification. From 2002 to 2004, he collaborated with Álvaro Siza's architectural studio in Porto. Subsequently, he returned to Valencia, where a year later he set up his own architectural practice. In 2016, he obtained his doctorate degree Cum Laude from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, before a tribunal chaired by the architect and UPC professor Carlos Ferrater. In 2005 he founded the Fran Silvestre Arquitectos studio in Valencia. His work shows influences of the architect and Pritzker Prize winner Álvaro Siza and the sculptor Andreu Alfaro, among others. Factors such as modulation, seriation and light can be appreciated in his projects. His projects include the Alfafar Art Centre and Auditorium (2008), the Atrium House (2009), the House on the Cliff (2011), the Balint House (2014) and the House between the Pine Forest (2016). Some of his projects have obtained international awards and recognition, such as the MHK Award in Berlin in 2009, the Nagrade Hise Award in 2011, the Red Dot Design Award in 2013, the BEAU Award, or the IFCC in New York, both in 2016. He has taken part in international architects' congresses such as the Cityliv, held in Maastricht in 2013, or the International Congress of Architecture in Panama in 2014. His work has been published in magazines such as GA Houses, On-Site or Arquitectura Viva, and specialised books on architecture by publishers such as Taschen and Phaidon Press, and has been displayed in exhibitions held in different countries. In March 2018 he won the competition for the construction of a macro-complex in the city of Qingdao against prestigious international architects. He teaches projects at the Higher Technical School of Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, where he was deputy director until 2011, at the European University and directs the MArch Master in Architecture, in which Álvaro Siza, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Carlos Ferrater, Aires Mateus and Juan Domingo Santos collaborate. He currently holds the Regnier Chair at Kansas State University, from which he directs the fifth year of architectural projects at the university.
